______________________________________________________________STUART — Grant Werle began the conversation easily enough. After introducing himself to baseball legend Ralph Kiner, Werle talked a little bit about growing up in Pittsburgh and watching the outfielder hit home runs.
Then he threw him a curveball. Did Kiner, Werle asked, know a guy named Frank Gustine?
Gustine was Werle’s college baseball coach at Point Park University. As it turned out, not only did Kiner know Gustine, he was Kiner’s first roommate with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1946. Not only that, he remembered Gustine’s bar on the University of Pittsburgh campus and doing press conferences there.
“We talked about Roberto Clemente and how he got his last career hit off of Jon Matlack and we talked about Forbes Field and the monument in the outfield,” Werle said. “I was shocked at how good he looked for being (86).”
Kiner, along with 16-time Gold Glove winner Jim Kaat, free-agent pitcher Scott Proctor, and former major leaguers Rusty Meacham, Rob Murphy and Tommy Hutton were all at the Elliott Museum as part of the “Fall Classic: For The Love of the Game” festivities that run through Sunday.
